History of Culgruff

Robert Stewart had Culgruff built as a wedding gift for his wife, the daughter of the third Baronet of Cardoness. Construction took six years and was completed in 1889. This year the house celebrates its 130th birthday. In 1902, Robert Stewart died. The couple did not have any children so the house eventually passed to the family of Mrs Stewart. In 1947 shortly after the engagement of Her majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duchess of Grafton,  made a private visit to the house with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Late in the 1940s the ownership of the house passed to a Mrs McCormick. It was then that the house first became a hotel. In 1970s  the house was then sold to a Mr Grayson. Cupid then worked her magic as after meeting a house guest Mr Grayson married her! Mr and Mrs Grayson  then continued operating the house with some letting rooms until they sold the house in 2008. Robert Shaw was the next owner and  operated the house as a hotel  as well as offering meals. We are the current guardians of the house, having bought Culgruff  in June 2018.

We took the decision of bringing forward some of the  plans we had  when we initially acquired Culgruff. Having to have the areas affected by the fire repaired, meant we were going to be closed to guests anyway and we felt that it was an opportune time to utilise this time wisely. Having researched our options we decided that as well as having the tea room, we could hold special events. These could be anything from private cosy dinner events through to conference facilities for business clients wanting a special unique venue. As well as "uplifting" the initial rooms we had completed. We will be expanding on the number of bedroom suites we are able to offer. In turn this will allow us to look at accommodating guests that might wish to have Culgruff as their wedding venue. Our accommodation will therefore also  incorporate  the top floor . We have listened to suggestions from friends and family and will be looking to have a large games room with a pool table as well as a new bar area. For those wanting to have some pampering, a treatment room for massage as well as a Turkish steam room and sauna room.

Why Choose Us?

We appreciate that there is a wide range of accommodation options out there. We sincerely hope that with our ambitious plans ,we will be able to offer somewhere that will be truly magical. This will take a bit of time so that we can ensure things are done correctly by this beautiful building. We would like to thank everyone who has wished us well to date and are continuing to support us in this venture . Very best wishes, The McCormick family x
