Robert Stewart had Culgruff built as a wedding gift for his wife, the daughter of the third Baronet of Cardoness. Construction took six years and was completed in 1889. In 1902, Robert Stewart died. The couple did not have any children so the house eventually passed to the family of Mrs Stewart. In 1947 shortly after the engagement of Her majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duchess of Grafton, made a private visit to the house with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Late in the 1940s the ownership of the house passed to a Mrs McCormick. It was then that the house first became a hotel. In 1970s the house was then sold to a Mr Grayson. We have been told that Cupid then worked her magic as after meeting a house guest Mr Grayson we believe married her! Mr and Mrs Grayson then continued operating the house with some letting rooms until they sold the house in 2008. Robert Shaw was the next owner and operated the house as a hotel as well as offering meals. We are the current guardians of the house, having bought Culgruff in June 2018.

Take a walk through the 37 acres. We have several designated routes that take in the best bits to see. Borrow some "wellies" and a "brolly" if the weather isn't being kind. If it is lovely weather, opt for a picnic basket lunch at several beautiful spots within the grounds. You will no doubt see a wide variety of wildlife that also call Culgruff their home. If you would rather relax by choosing a book from our well stocked library, or have a game of chess or help us complete one of the ever present jigsaw puzzles. Whatever you choose, you will not be short of options! We very much look forward to meeting you. We understand that there is a wide choice of accommodation out there and thankyou for considering our home as your sanctuary for a while. Keith and Angelique McCormick
